Production Supervisor – Job Description

The Production Supervisor is responsible for leading daily manufacturing operations to ensure safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency targets are consistently achieved. This role provides direct supervision to production team members, coordinates workflow across shifts, and ensures adherence to company policies, regulatory requirements, and operational standards. The Production Supervisor plays a key role in fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and teamwork while maintaining a safe and productive work environment.


Key Responsibilities

Operations Management
  • Oversee day-to-day production activities to meet output, quality, and delivery goals

  • Coordinate staffing, scheduling, and workflow to optimize productivity

  • Monitor production metrics and implement corrective actions as needed

  • Ensure proper equipment operation and partner with maintenance to minimize downtime

  • Manage shift transitions to ensure clear communication and operational continuity

Team Leadership & Development
  • Supervise, train, and mentor production employees

  • Set performance expectations and provide ongoing coaching and feedback

  • Conduct performance evaluations and address disciplinary matters when necessary

  • Promote employee engagement and maintain a positive, team-oriented work environment

  • Lead daily shift meetings to communicate goals, updates, and safety topics

Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure all products meet established quality standards and specifications

  • Enforce adherence to safety policies, GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices), and regulatory requirements

  • Conduct routine inspections and audits of production processes

  • Investigate and resolve quality issues in collaboration with QA teams

Safety & Risk Management
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture

  • Identify potential hazards and implement preventative measures

  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)

  • Lead incident investigations and implement corrective actions

Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and lower production costs

  • Support Lean, Six Sigma, or other operational excellence initiatives

  • Analyze production data to drive informed decision-making

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with maintenance, quality, supply chain, and management

Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain accurate production records, reports, and documentation

  • Monitor labor hours and overtime to align with budget expectations

  • Assist in inventory control and material usage tracking

  • Support planning and execution of production schedules


Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s or bachelor’s degree preferred

  • 3–5+ years of manufacturing experience, with supervisory experience preferred

  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, safety standards, and quality systems

  • Ability to analyze data and make sound operational decisions

  • Proficiency in basic computer systems and production software
